Overall record: 8-10
Key athletes and their accomplishments: “Samantha Saladino (junior) is in the top ten in every conference statistic- she is averaging 13 points per game and eight rebounds per game,” siad coach Gary Honson. “Joselyn Gray (senior) is also ranked very high in many conference statistics- she is averaging 11 points per game and she is in the top ten in the MAC in shooting percentage.”
Strengths of team: “We have relied heavily this year on our defense. We have the best defensive scoring average in the MAC conference (we are giving up 39 points per game). We also have two of the top ten scorers in the MAC- Samantha Saladino and Joselyn Gray.”
How the team needs to improve: “Our biggest problem this year has been our consistency. I think the main reason for this is the youth that we have on our team- we have three sophomores (Lindsay Buckles, Lexie Johnson, and Rebekah Willich) and one freshman (Maddison Ruggeberg) on our varsity team. It has been a learning experience for these underclassmen, but they are continuing to improve and develop every game.”
Results of last week’s games/meets: “On Tuesday, Jan. 30 we defeated Muscatine by a score of 53-45. On Friday, Feb. 2 we lost at Burlington 64-58.”
Thoughts on qualifying for state: “We have a bye in the first round of the regional tournament. We will play the winner of the North/Bettendorf game on Saturday, Feb. 17 @ West at 7:00. The winner of that game will play on the following Saturday (Feb. 24) in Cedar Rapids at the U.S. Cellular Center- that game will probably be against the 3rd ranked team in the state, Cedar Rapids Washington.”
